18th February 2009 – Research In Motion (RIM) was yesterday awarded the UMA Innovation Award for Best Smartphone in the Best Mobile Handset category. The BlackBerry® Curve 8320 was identified as the winner at the Second Annual UMA Innovation Awards, held at Mobile World Congress 2009 in Barcelona and awarded by Yves Tyrode, head of TechnoCentre at Orange/France.
Judged by an independent panel and organised by UMA Today, the international consortium of companies leading the adoption of 3GPP UMA technology, the UMA Innovation Awards recognise excellence and innovation in UMA-based products and services.
The BlackBerry Curve 8320 is one of RIM’s smallest and lightest full-QWERTY keyboard smartphones with built-in Wi-Fi. Combining EDGE/GPRS/GSM cellular and Wi-Fi connectivity for data access and voice support (UMA), the smartphone was selected as a result of its wide range of features and ability to switch seamlessly between Wi-Fi and GSM networks.
Other finalists for this award included: HTC Shadow; the BlackBerry 8120 smartphone; and the BlackBerry 8900 smartphone
