Amsterdam, Sept. 18, 2001 -- UPS today said it will provide $5 million in disaster relief assistance in the wake of the tragic incidents in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania. The assistance includes $2 million in cash and $3 million of in-kind logistical and transportation services plus scores of UPS volunteers who are assisting with the relief efforts.
UPS Chairman and CEO Jim Kelly also extended the company's thanks to the UPS employees who worked so diligently last week to provide service to 1.8 million daily UPS customers and to those employees who specifically assisted with the recovery efforts in New York and Washington.
"Over the past week, UPS has provided its people, vehicles, aircraft and expertise to numerous recovery activities," Kelly said. "Our people have responded admirably and we will continue to do what we can to be helpful."
The cash contribution will be divided with $1 million going to the September 11th Fund, which was established by the United Way, New York Community Trust and the Council on Foundations. The remaining $1 million in cash will be dispersed among local agencies plus the national community-based organizations coordinating the relief and eventual rebuilding efforts.
"Our in-kind transportation and logistical services will be directed by Gifts in Kind International under the direction of the September 11th Fund," said Evern Cooper, president of The UPS Foundation*. "We've learned over the years that the most effective way to provide our services in this kind of situation is under the direction of disaster relief professionals and that is how we will focus our support."
