Hoofddorp, January 30, 2006 -- Allied Telesyn, a global provider of secure Ethernet/IP access solutions, and a progressive innovator in affordable optical transport, this week introduced its LX44000 Multi-protocol WDM Optical Transport System. Ideal for service providers and metro Ethernet networks and other networks with a need to backhaul heavy network traffic, the AT-LX44000 features four 10-Gigabit interfaces in a single 1.5RU modular chassis with integrated management and optical line protection.
An LX44000 system supporting 40-Gigabits of capacity, complete with management module, dual power supplies and four line cards with optical protection, would list for $95,000. Comparable solutions from vendors such as MRV Communications or Nortel may list for $120,000 to $250,000.
The new AT-LX44000 system leverages WDM technology to aggregate four multi-protocol 10Gbps services across a single fiber pair. In addition to the benefits of efficient aggregation and use of existing fiber spans, the system offers a suite of critical resiliency and flexibility features including: remote in-band management, optical line protection, complete system diagnostics and alarms, as well as a completely modular chassis with field replaceable power supplies, line cards, multiplexer, fans, and management module. The complete package allows network operators to maximize uptime while allowing for more services and customers over existing infrastructure.
"Allied Telesyn's CWDM product breaks the price barrier for 40G transport systems. Instead of service providers upgrading legacy expensive SONET/SDH ADM equipment or core switching/core routing equipment they can adopt a cap-and-grow approach and start investing in an optical transport system that is service agnostic for both TDM and IP ", said Philip Yim, Executive Vice President of Product Management and Marketing. "The LX44000 has received significant customer input in its design the net result is one of the industry's smallest optical transport foot prints in the market."
"The need for a 40Gb WDM platform is being driven by two main market movements: the declining cost of Gigabit Ethernet, and rising demand for converged bandwidth carrying voice, video and data applications," adds Yim. "As Gigabit becomes more prevalent, a simple 10GbE uplink is not going to be enough to aggregate thousands of users back to a central office. The LX44000 features multiple multi-protocol 10G links multiplexed across a single 40G fiber, which can handle the high bandwidth data demand and still provide a cost-savings over more expensive DWDM/SONET/SDH solutions."
The LX44000 features carrier-grade optical line protection directly into the multiplexer module for fail over in the event of fiber span faults. The line side fibers, which carry all of the multiplexed traffic (up to 40Gbps), will fail over to the protection path within the standard SONET, sub 50msec, specification. Full diagnostics integrated into the software let administrators monitor unit and line-card status, and control power level thresholds for the optical switch.
Each AT-LX44011 multi-protocol line card for the AT-LX44000 features an XFP pluggable client interface and is capable of transporting Gigabit Ethernet, SONET, or SDH services. Forward Error Correction (FEC) and Electronic Dispersion Compensation (EDC) are integrated directly onto each line card, which maximizes the signal integrity and reliability.
The LX44000 is part of Allied Telesyn's extensive line of WDM transport products, which includes the WaveGlider Passive CWDM Platform and the LightExplorer Optical Transport Platform, enabling the transport of multiple dissimilar services across existing fiber infrastructure.
