AMSTERDAM, – Rabobank Nederland and NCR Corporation (NYSE: NCR) today announced that Rabobank and its affiliated banks will install EMV standard compliant software across its 3,000-plus ATM network in the Netherlands after becoming the first financial institution in the country to achieve EMVCo version 4 certification on a XP platform from MasterCard in October 2005.
“Rabobank is an early adopter of all banking innovations,” said Tonarius Looyesteyn, Rabobank’s ATM product manager. “Achieving this EMV milestone means we are taking a lead in ensuring ATMs are ready for the introduction of chip-based technology on debit and credit cards. This move to EMV standards will further improve card security and enables the introduction of new services through the ATM.”
Rabobank’s EMV certification includes the ATM application and Rabobank’s transaction switch and authorization network applications. Rabobank and NCR jointly developed the EMV ATM application using NCR’s APTRA suite of solutions, including NCR’s dedicated APTRATM
EMV modules.
NCR will manage the rollout of the EMV application across the ATMs of the 270 cooperative banks in the Rabobank network, which accounts for 40 percent of ATMs in the Netherlands. At the same time, NCR will also upgrade all Rabobank ATMs to a Windows XP platform.
Chip and PIN technology replaces the use of magnetic strip on cards, which helps to counter skimming and counterfeiting crime. While more and more credit cards in The Netherlands already use EMV Chip and PIN technology, EMV-compliant debit cards with chip and PIN will be introduced from mid 2006.
“Rabobank is taking a lead in innovation in the banking sector by its implementation of EMV in the Netherlands”, said Bartjan van der Sluis, NCR’s vice president for Northern Europe. “Smaller Dutch banks have rolled out NCR EMV approved software on their Windows NT-based ATMs using EMVCo version 3.1 but Rabobank is the first financial institution to adopt the most recent EMVCo version 4 specification on a Windows XP-based ATM application.”
