DELFT, 4 NOVEMBER 2005 - Fox Crypto, onderdeel van Fox-IT, heeft van de Nederlandse overheid opdracht gekregen om een nieuwe generatie crypto chips te ontwikkelen beveiligen als gevolg van de toenemende behoefte aan veilige communicatie. De crypto chips worden door de overheid gebruikt om haar staatsgeheimen te beveiligen. Op basis van hetzelfde ontwerp zal ook een variant ontwikkeld worden die voor commerciële toepassingen ingezet kan worden.
Fox Crypto leverde reeds exclusief de vorige generatie crypto chips, de GP2000 voor het bedrijfsleven en de GcdPhi voor de overheid. De nieuwe crypto chips, genaamd Red Fox voor het bedrijfsleven en Red Fox GT voor de overheid, zullen rond het 2e kwartaal van 2007 gereed zijn.
De overheidsversie van de chip wordt ontwikkeld voor het gebruik tot en met de rubricering Stg Zeer Geheim. Doordat een variant voor het bedrijfsleven wordt ontwikkeld is het voor het bedrijfsleven mogelijk gegevens op een vergelijkbaar niveau te beschermen als de overheid doet voor haar gevoeligste informatie.
Grote voordelen van de nieuwe chip familie zijn de fors hogere snelheid, ondersteuning van de meest gebruikte moderne versleutelingsalgoritmes en de aanwezigheid van volledige VPN/IPSEC ondersteuning in de chip. De chip zal in diverse toepassingen gebruikt gaan worden zoals VPN, harddisk vercijfering en off-line file vercijfering.
