Utrecht, 3 mei 2005 - Trend Micro issued a "medium risk" to raise awareness of a new computer threat "WORM_SOBER.S" that spreads to computer users through an email that tells the recipient they have won (2) free tickets to the FIFA World Cup 2006 games to be held in Germany. Tickets for the event are highly coveted, and many sports fans may be tricked into downloading the virus onto their computers.
The email, which has been seen in both English and German languages, appears to be an official communication from the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), and some versions even includes a name and contact information for FIFA.
The message may arrive from "administrator", "hostmaster", "info", or "webmaster", and has such subject headers as "registration confirmation", "your password", or "your email was blocked". The email states, "Congratulations, you have won tickets," and invites the recipient to open an attached ZIP file that supposedly contains additional information on claiming the tickets. Instead, a worm-type virus is downloaded to the computer.
Once the user is infected with "WORM_SOBER.S", the program uses the Outlook address book to forward itself to more potential victims.
Computer users are cautioned to delete this email immediately if received.
