Oberursel, 25th January 2005 – The German Bundeswehr, one of Europe's largest armed forces has signed a general contract with Utimaco for 20,000 licenses for SafeGuard Easy encryption software. SafeGuard Easy is to protect sensitive, classified data in mobile environments against unauthorized access. One of the most important arguments for using SafeGuard® Easy is its certification (level "medium") by the BSI (German Federal Office for Information Security) in accordance with Evaluation Assurance Level 3 (EAL3) of the Common Criteria standard. This is the highest level of protection that a purely software solution can be awarded in accordance with this standard. Another decisive plus point for SafeGuard® Easy is its ease of implementation which means the IT security policy can be applied across the board throughout the Bundeswehr with a minimum of fuss.
"We really need high-level protection. A notebook that belongs to someone in the Bundeswehr is a very tempting target for a thief. For us, espionage is not just an abstract risk: it is a real threat which we must protect ourselves against. Even thieves that are "only" motivated by material gain must not be able to access the information." says Lieutenant Colonel Peter Warnicke, IT Security Officer for the Bundeswehr.
In technological terms, SafeGuard Easy provides the highest-possible security for the Bundeswehr in two ways: one of these is the use of powerful algorithms to encrypt hard disks which turn each notebook into an electronic fortress. If a notebook is lost or stolen, the data stored on it cannot be accessed by outsiders. Even if the device itself is unprotected, no-one can access its data unless they know the password. In addition, the challenge-response procedure provides an efficient and secure emergency system if a user forgets their password. This makes user support much easier, especially in a mobile environment.
