BT SHORTENS THE DISTANCE BETWEEN EUROPE AND ASIA PACIFIC
BT today announced that European companies can now communicate more quickly with their operations in the Asia Pacific region due to the completion of its new direct link between London and Singapore. The network, which encircles the globe and carries traffic in both directions, enhances BT's existing service, offering businesses a highly resilient direct link from Europe to Singapore without routing via the US. This will enable data traffic travelling between Europe and the Far East to complete its journey in half the time. Enterprises will have the choice of directing traffic east or west to suit the location of their distant offices, and can be assured of total global network resilience. Additionally, BT has boosted its service capability in the Asia Pacific region through further partnerships in South Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia and China.
As a result of these partnerships and the new network link, customers will benefit from regional and global connectivity from a single provider with a single contract and a single set of Service Level Agreements (SLAs). The enhanced network continues BT's drive into convergence, supporting multi-protocol label switching (MPLS), ATM, Frame Relay and voice. It will also enable the company to offer a uniform suite of network services worldwide.
Aaron McCormack, vice president Global Products, BT Global Services, said:
"In the digital networked economy, international business is dependent on reliable global infrastructure. As we have seen recently, problems with sub sea cables do happen, and can cause major issues for businesses. The new link between London and Singapore extends our reach in Asia Pacific, and means that our network now completely encircles the globe meeting customers'
need for total resilience. It enables us to better serve the Asian market and provide European customers with a more comprehensive global communications offering from a single, financially stable supplier."
The additional partnerships in the Asia Pac region specified today build on those announced in April 2003 in Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia.
BT is also enhancing its global reach with new points of presence (PoPs) in Hungary, Russia, Slovakia, and additional nodes in Spain, Belgium, Netherlands, UK, France and the US. The company's current global network growth equates to one MPLS node being deployed every 10 days.
