In a new report, DMO2003, Telecom.paper analyses the developments in the Dutch market for mobile communication services during 2003, and compare the findings with the market's performance in 2002. The main focus of the report is on mobile network operators and includes KPN, Vodafone, T-Mobile, Orange, and Telfort and their performance in the Dutch market.
Key findings are:
- Despite difficult economic conditions, the Dutch mobile communication services market kept good place in 2003 and grew 14% to EUR 5.4 billion, up EUR 0.7 billion from EUR 4.7 billion in 2002.
- Growth in the mobile customer base already showed signs of picking up vis-à-vis 2002 and accelerated in the second half of the year with 13.1 million active mobile customers at the end of December 2003, up from 11.8 million a year before. The number of prepay customers are picking up again. Led by a strong recovery in the second half of the year, prepay customers were up to 8.1 million, 10% up for the year.
- Blended ARPU was up 7% to EUR 36.2 per month. Despite high customer growth rates, and market fears that the customer growth figures were artificially inflated, blended and post pay ARPUs continued to improve in 2003. On average, people continued to spend more on mobile communications services.
- Revenues for non-voice services are still relatively low and totalled EUR 553 million for the year 2003, up 40% from EUR 380 million in 2002. Share of non-voice services stood at 10% during 2003, up from 8% in 2002.
- T-Mobile continued to gain ground on market leaders (KPN and Vodafone), and distanced themselves further from the smaller ones (Orange and Telfort). With regard to the mobile customer base in 2003, T-Mobile gained most, followed by Orange. Telfort stabilised market share, while leaders KPN and Vodafone lost.
- T-Mobile and Orange also win larger share of mobile service revenues during 2003, KPN, Telfort and Vodafone loose share of mobile service revenues.
- Despite the large number of companies making plans to enter the market for mobile services, their impact on the market is not visible yet. Service Providers and MVNOs directly serviced 14% of the customer at the end of 2003, which was hardly any different from the situation in 2002.
