New Symmetrix DMX-2 extends Fujitsu Siemens Computers' lead in high-end storage
Higher performance enables consolidation, replication and central management of more information
Munich/Germany, 12 February 2004 - As of today, Fujitsu Siemens Computers, Europe's leading IT company, will be offering the new Symmetrix DMX-2 series from EMC. Together with a range of new software offerings, this new high-end storage technology helps customers consolidate, centrally manage and better protect ever larger amounts of information.
The latest DMX-2 enhancements are available immediately not only in the new Symmetrix DMX-2 models, but also as data-in-place upgrades to existing Symmetrix DMX systems. In addition to previous improvements, these newest high-end enhancements offer customers unparalleled investment protection.
They include:
- New DMX-2 channel and disk directors employing 1GHz PowerPC processors deliver twice the performance of previous Symmetrix DMX directors.
- New 32GB global memory directors double the maximum Symmetrix DMX cache configurations to 256 GB - twice that offered by the nearest competitor.
- Support for the latest high-performance 73GB, 15K RPM Fibre Channel disk drives.
- The option of parity RAID or a new RAID 5 implementation, giving customers additional choice for cost-effective, high-performance data protection.
- Multi-array support for the popular long-distance replication technology SRDF/A.
This again demonstrates that Direct Matrix Architecture (DMX) is designed to scale performance, capacity and connectivity as customer business and economic requirements dictate, while also taking immediate advantage of the latest advancements in technology. As a result, today's DMX-2 based systems can offer up to twice the performance of the initial Symmetrix DMX series (introduced just 12 months ago), thus delivering the highest level of storage system performance in the industry.
"Today's announcement reinforces our ongoing commitment to supply a unique class of storage to handle massive, unpredictable workloads while providing complete information protection and availability," said Helmut Beck, Vice President Storage at Fujitsu Siemens Computers. "Our strategic partner EMC continues to impress customers by meeting their high-end storage expectations in every way. Symmetrix DMX-2 is no exception, delivering the performance they need for their most demanding applications. The investment protection that comes with it makes sure that everything works together - old and new."
David Donatelli, EMC's Executive Vice President of Storage Platforms Operations, said, "EMC and Fujitsu Siemens Computers are helping customers build many of the world's best-protected, most highly consolidated computing environments. Together, we've showcased our innovation, including the global failover capabilities of our combined solution. The new Symmetrix DMX-2 platform builds on that success and provides our customers with even greater performance and data protection capabilities."
