Amsterdam, 3 februari 2004 - IBM gaat de software leveren voor het high speed bagagesysteem op de nieuwe terminal 5 van Londen's Heathrow Airport. Het nieuwe systeem wordt door het bagage afhandelingsbedrijf Vanderlande Industries gebouwd voor de BAA (British Airports Authority) op de nieuwe terminal van Heathrow. IBM zal de software leveren voor de controle van bagage en de integratie met het totale afhandelingsysteem.
De keuze in het, voor IBM Euro 10 miljoen grote contract was gebaseerd op haar ruime ervaring in de luchtvaartindustrie en eerdere samenwerking met Vanderlande Industries in andere luchthavenprojecten.
Het high speed systeem zal de verplaatsing van bagage sneller af gaan handelen. Ook kan bagage van vertraagde vluchten nu sneller worden verplaatst. Op deze manier hoopt de luchthaven een nieuwe benchmark te worden voor de luchthaven van de 21e eeuw.
Volgens Charles Vincent, Partner bij IBM Business Consulting Services zien luchthavens en luchtvaartmaatschappijen een snelle bagageafhandeling als een belangrijke stap in een hogere tevredenheid onder passagiers. Met het efficiëntere systeem ziet hij de transfertijden en kosten van bagageafhandeling sterk verminderen.
IBM heeft al ruime ervaring op internationale luchthavens als Schiphol, Dubai en Toronto. Ook verzorgt ze elektronische check-in systemen voor ondermeer British Airways, KLM en United Airlines. IBM software for high-tech Vanderlande Industries baggage handling system at Heathrow Terminal 5
Amsterdam, February 3, 2004: Vanderlande Industries has selected IBM to supply the software for the high speed baggage handling system it is building for airport operator BAA (British Airports Authority), for its new fifth terminal at London's Heathrow. As part of the system IBM will supply software for much of the High Level Control system and participate in the integration of the total baggage handling system.
IBM has been selected as a partner by Vanderlande Industries in close consultation with airport operator BAA. The decision to award IBM the Euro 10 million contract was based on IBM's ability to offer end-to-end solutions as well as its experience in the air transport industry and a successful working relationship with Vanderlande Industries on other airport projects.
Heathrow Terminal 5 aims to be "the world's most successful airport development" and a benchmark in airport design, construction and operations. To achieve this, the different parties involved will work together and take a mutually supportive approach, essential for a successful project outcome.
The sophisticated baggage system will have multiple routes through the airport baggage system allowing for the loading of bags even from late arriving connecting flights, and contribute towards making Heathrow a pre-eminent 21st century European hub for airline passengers.
