AUSTIN, Texas – Jan. 21, 2004 – TippingPoint Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: TPTI), the leaders in high-speed intrusion prevention, today announced that the UnityOne Intrusion Prevention Systems block the virus known as ‘Bagle,’ ‘Bagel,’or ‘Beagle’ that propagates via e-mail.
Beagle is a virus that arrives as a Windows executable e-mail attachment. In order for a computer to become infected, a victim user must open the malicious attachment. Upon execution, Beagle harvests e-mail addresses from the file system of the victim's machine, and sends a copy of itself to each address. The virus also installs a backdoor on TCP port 6777, which allows an attacker to remotely control the infected machine.
TippingPoint customers are protected against this threat by the following two security filters: "SMTP E-mail Windows Executable Attachment" and "POP/IMAP E-mail Windows Executable Attachment," available through the Digital Vaccine service since August 2003. These filters block the virus' e-mail messages and prevent the malicious code from being delivered to networks protected by the UnityOne. TippingPoint’s Digital Vaccine service continuously updates UnityOne systems with the latest vulnerability-based security filters.
“At TippingPoint, we provide protection against different types of cyber attacks, including e-mail-borne viruses,” said CTO Marc Willebeek-LeMair. “As a provider of proactive protection, this filter has been in place for some time so that employees and innocent computer users are not impacted by threats of this nature.”
