PALO ALTO, Calif., Oct. 27, 2003 - The following is a statement from HP (NYSE:HPQ) regarding worldwide handheld devices market share numbers for the third quarter of calendar year 2003(1):
According to IDC's report, HP stunned the handheld industry with phenomenal unit growth of 100.3 percent year-over-year and 52.5 percent sequentially. HP not only led the overall growth of the handheld industry, but also moved significantly closer to the No. 1 position in the overall PDA category. HP remains the No. 1 worldwide Pocket PC vendor.
"Customers responded loud and clear to HP's broad handheld product portfolio which not only helped HP lead the worldwide growth with a 52.5 percent sequential gain, but also made us the biggest contributor to taking the overall handheld market into positive sequential growth for the first time since Q4 2002," said Ted Clark, vice president handhelds, Mobile Computing Global Business Unit, HP. "HP surpassed industry expectations, with quarter-over-quarter market share jumping from 17.6 to 24.5 percent. That growth helped us further solidify our strong No. 2 position in handhelds."
In June, HP introduced five new iPAQ Pocket PC models, including models targeted at the consumer market. The introductions filled out HP's Pocket PC portfolio to meet the needs of both enterprises and consumers - and that made a solid impact in the third quarter. In addition, HP was the first major Pocket PC vendor to successfully ship Windows Mobile 2003 upgrade software for Pocket PC.

HP neemt de leiding in de markt voor handheld PC's in EMEA
Marktgegevens laten sterke groei HP in het derde kwartaal zien, vooral in Nederland, Groot Brittannië, Spanje en Italië
AMSTELVEEN, 29 oktober 2003 - HP heeft in het derde kwartaal de leiding genomen in het aantal geleverde handheld PC's in Europa, het Midden-Oosten en Afrika (EMEA). Dit is de conclusie van marktonderzoeker Canalys.
Uit de gegevens van Canalys blijkt dat HP aan het eind van het derde kwartaal een marktaandeel had van 31,1 procent. Dit is een stijging van 86,6 procent ten opzichte van een jaar geleden. De totale groei van de markt voor handheld PC's bedroeg het afgelopen jaar 34,4 procent.
De leidende positie van HP in het EMEA-gebied is bevestigd door het onafhankelijke onderzoeksbureau Context SalesOut, dat HP zelfs een marktaandeel van 39 procent toekent. Volgens deze organisatie is de totale marktgroei echter beperkt gebleven tot 25 procent.
Volgens cijfers van Context SalesOut heeft HP vooral in Nederland, Groot Brittannië, Spanje en Italië goede resultaten behaald.
"De uitstekende resultaten van HP in Nederland op het gebied van handheld PC's maken duidelijk dat we met onze oplossingen voorzien in de behoeften in de Nederlandse markt," zegt Kees Vouton, Category Manager Personal Systems Group (PSG) bij HP Nederland. "Dankzij de krachtige en veelzijdige HP iPAQ's met verschillende connectiviteitsopties kunnen gebruikers altijd en overal beschikken over de informatie die zij nodig hebben, zowel op zakelijk als op persoonlijk gebied."
Volgens Context SalesOut zijn de uitstekende resultaten van HP onder andere te danken aan goede verkoopcijfers in de low-end markt voor handheld PC's. Dit is vooral het gevolg van de lancering van de HP iPAQ h1900 series, de beschikbaarheid van een aantal gebundelde GPS/navigatie-oplossingen op basis van HP iPAQs, positieve recensies in de pers en verschillende media-awards voor iPAQs. Daarnaast zijn de HP iPAQs nu ook opgenomen in het HP TopValue kanaalprogramma, waarmee de omzetgroei wordt gestimuleerd.
