Avaya converged solutions score for new Cologne stadium network in preparation for 2006 FIFA World Cup(tm) Germany
Deutsche Telekom T-Com and Avaya win pitch for provision of converged communications infrastructure for FIFA World Cup(tm) venue
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: TUESDAY, 21 OCTOBER, 2003
AVAYA FORUM - BARCELONA, SPAIN - Avaya Inc. (NYSE:AV), a leading global provider of communications networks and services for businesses, and an official partner of the 2006 FIFA World Cup(tm), today announced that Avaya voice and data converged infrastructure and applications are being installed at the Cologne stadium (RheinEnergie Stadion) in Germany. The deal was completed in partnership with Deutsche Telecom subsidiary and Avaya Silver BusinessPartner, Deutsche Telekom Network, Projects & Services GmbH, and the Avaya system is being provided to the customer by T-Com. The stadium is one of the 12 venues for the next FIFA World Cup(tm) being held in Germany in 2006.
The decision to install a converged communications network using Avaya equipment was driven by two main factors: the need to have infrastructure in place that can easily be upgraded to cope with a global sporting event in 2006; and the fact that Avaya equipment will be used for FIFA communications in all participating stadiums around the FIFA World Cup(tm). An existing Avaya network at Cologne will make the installation process prior to the FIFA World Cup(tm) much easier.
Upon completion of the installation, which is scheduled for the end of 2003, Cologne stadium staff will use the new Internet Protocol-based network to manage internal and external day-to-day communications. The new infrastructure will be easily expanded to accommodate up to a potential 800 outside lines needed to cope with peak time communications around FIFA World Cup(tm) matches, an eightfold increase in the number of ports normally required for a football stadium.
Lars-Ole Hansen, Avaya regional president, Europe, Middle East and Africa, said: "Following the smooth running of FIFA communications around the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan(tm), Avaya has clearly demonstrated its ability to deliver seamless converged communications on the world stage. This has been recognised by the board of Cologne stadium, and we hope that this win is the first of many across participating stadiums Germany. We look forward to working at Cologne now and during the run up to the FIFA World Cup(tm) in 2006."
Michael Kelly, Head of IT Solutions, FIFA, said: "Avaya is the converged communications provider for the FIFA World Cup(tm). I am pleased that our communications are in safe hands. From medics to the media, everybody will be able to get in touch effortlessly at Cologne stadium even during the busiest periods."
