Siemens and Juniper Networks today announced that Telstra, Australia’s leading telecommunications carrier, has deployed a Siemens supplied and supported solution using Juniper Networks E-series platform and SDX-300 Service Deployment System to provide new Public Wireless Local Area Networks (PWLANs) or hotspot services. The infrastructure enables Telstra to cultivate new revenue streams from the growing business and consumer demand for mobile connectivity via 802.11 (Wi-Fi) hotspots.
These PWLAN services will enable wireless broadband Internet access for business travellers and consumers, and will be offered in public areas including Qantas Club Lounges and Rydges Hotels.
Telstra will deploy the E-series (Broadband Access) platform combined with the SDX-300 Service Deployment System to centrally provision and authenticate PWLAN services, tailoring them to the unique requirements of each individual subscriber and hotspot location. Based on Juniper Networks Model for Integrated Network Transformation (MINT), this approach transforms today's disparate, operationally intensive PWLAN offerings from commodity Internet access to a profitable, value-added service model.
“To maintain our position as Australia’s leading mobile communications providers, we must build upon our momentum by continuing to develop and enhance the portfolio of services that we offer our customers,” said Telstra’s Chief of Products, Consumer and Marketing, Ms Lynda O’Grady. “We selected Siemens and Juniper Networks because of its successful track record in supplying reliable, carrier-class IP infrastructure products. The Siemens supplied and supported Juniper Networks E-series and SDX-300 will enable us to deliver revenue-generating hotspot applications without concern for future scalability requirements.”
Siemens Australia will supply both the E-series device and SDX-300 platform along with Carrier class support services for both the implementation and throughout the life of the equipment and software. “We are pleased to add Wireless infrastructure to the extent of our relationship with Telstra. Siemens now contributes significantly to the infrastructure of Telstra’s growth segments in IP, Broadband Access, Optical Transmission, Systems and now Wireless infrastructure, complementing our Mobile Handsets business” said Paul Thompson, Siemens Corporate Account Manager for Telstra.
“Telstra is Australia’s leading mobile communications provider and the fact that it selected Siemens and Juniper Networks is testament to the feature richness and quality of our product line,” said Shaun Page, Regional Director, Australia/New Zealand, Juniper Networks, Inc. “Together the E-series platform and SDX-300 Service Deployment System provide Telstra with a network infrastructure that is built to deliver new, innovative services with the level of performance its customers expect.”
