Siemens completes migration project at Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG

Centralized administration of telecommunications at 13 European sites lowers operating costs

Siemens IC Networks has completed the conversion of all the telecommunications systems of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG to the HiPath 4000 real-time IP system. The contract encompassed migration at 13 European sites in Germany, Great Britain, Austria, and Switzerland with a total of 9000 ports. At the same time, a global network management system was implemented, and both voice mail systems and call centers standardized. As an internationally active company, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen opted for Siemens' offer since it offered central administration of the entire communication network, thus allowing operating costs to be cut substantially. In addition, within the communication architecture distributed across several countries, standardized solutions could be adapted to the respective technical level of the individual site.

Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG is a global solution provider for the entire print media industry with headquarters in Heidelberg in the German state of Baden-Wurttemberg. The new communication solution should, primarily, allow a centralized infrastructure to be set up in the company and provide a system that would meet the requirements for future conversion to IP networks. With branches in all the countries involved, Siemens proved to be the ideal partner since it was able to offer the relevant solutions locally.

For future conversion to a pure IP communication network, all the features can be made provided centrally to all the connected branches. The global network management system handles administration and support tasks for all the HiPath 4000 systems. In particular, this means monitoring of operating status, immediate processing of system messages, troubleshooting, administration of workpoints and the network, and precise billing of costs, as well as recording and analysis of the voice and data traffic. The existing phone and voice mail solutions at the sites in Heidelberg, Rohrbach, Munich, and Kiel with a total of about 2000 voice mailboxes were migrated to a central unified messaging system, HiPath Xpressions Version 3.0. Thus the uniform and standardized infrastructure makes a further contribution toward lowering operating costs – in six-digit figures! This unified messaging solution, that has now been implemented in Europe, should also serve as the basis for similar projects in the USA and Asia. In the mid-term, the plan there is to also optimize communication through centrally provided applications and network management.

HiPath is the Siemens Enterprise Convergence Architecture. It allows companies, in accordance with their own individual requirements and securing existing investments, to further develop their existing voice and data infrastructures, and, if necessary, to implement new IP (Internet Protocol) technologies. The extensive product portfolio offers companies various options for organizing the further development of their infrastructures on the basis of value creation and RoI (Return on Investment): There isn't one right way, but there is 'the' right way for each business. Siemens aims to become number 1 in this segment.

To date, more than 70 percent of the Fortune 500 companies have already opted for a Siemens Enterprise solution. Customers include BMW, DaimlerChrysler, Deutsche Bank, Ford, IBM, Kodak, Oracle, Sofor and Volvo.
