Natural Construct Spectrum 4.5 for Mainframes
~ generating Front-ends and Web Services for Mainframes ~
A new version of Construct Spectrum, Natural’s browser user interface and Web service generator for mainframes, is now available. Construct Spectrum Version 4.5 speeds up and simplifies the development and maintenance of both, browser user interfaces and open standard programming interfaces (Web services).
Making business logic implemented on mainframes available to end-users or other applications quickly is the value of the Natural front-end and Web services generator Construct Spectrum. The application developer’s competence is in implementing business processes and business rules. He shouldn’t need to be concerned about building fancy user interfaces. Instead, user interfaces for a Web browser can easily be generated out of the business component’s interface definitions using Construct Spectrum. Accessing an application via HTTP and a Web browser gives the application a virtually unlimited reach.
For each element of a component’s interface, and depending on data type and range of values, an appropriate graphical user interface (GUI) control is generated. In addition to those data input/output controls, navigation bars for controlling application flow are also generated. Such navigation controls are either generated out of high-level specifications maintained through Natural’s application generator Natural Construct, or out of manual specifications made at generation time. All generation defaults can of course be changed interactively before or during generation.
The front-ends are implemented in HTML (and JavaScript) that is dynamically created at runtime by applying a Construct Spectrum-created style sheet (XSL) to a Web service (XML) which is also generated by Construct Spectrum and based on Microsoft’s .NET technology.
The permanent need for further integration of enterprise business logic can easily require a user interface to be replaced by a standard programming interface to another business component. Therefore, in addition to generating browser front-ends, Construct Spectrum can also generate Web services out of component interface definitions. Integrating applications through Web services is easier and less expensive than through DCOM or CORBA, because the required technological prerequisites are much lower.
Complementary to Construct Spectrum is the Natural Engineer, a versatile code analysis and re-engineering tool. Because Construct Spectrum requires the business logic to be available in modularized form, monolithic application code can be decomposed into modules using Natural Engineer.
Construct Spectrum is part of Natural’s remote development architecture Single Point of Development (SPoD). And as much as Construct Spectrum makes it easy to generate both user and XML interfaces for business logic located on mainframes, SPoD makes it easy to develop such business logic for mainframes by using Natural on Windows.
Construct Spectrum Version 4.5 is now available as a general release for OS/390, z/OS, VSE/ESA and BS2000/OSD.
