Amsterdam, Netherlands. 17 April 2003 - Monique van Dusseldorp, founder of Van Dusseldorp & Partners, has been awarded one of the prestigious Vosko Awards for her contribution to the digital media industry, and in particular for europemedia.net, Van Dusseldorp & Partner’s daily and weekly online news service on European digital media developments.
Van Dusseldorp was announced as the category winner for internet services during the award ceremony held at the Rai Conference Centre in Amsterdam on Tuesday 15th April. europemedia.net works with a voluntary network of correspondents across Europe, as well as in-house editors, to provide information on developments in the telecommunications, media and internet industries across Europe, including Central and Eastern European countries.
Having survived for 5 years, europemedia.net is now the only news service of its kind covering these topics on a truly pan-European level, and boasts a readership among media and communications professionals in the tens of thousands. As Jury member Erik Huizer, Director Business Development with the NOB Cross Media Facilities, Professor Internet Applications at Twente University and a former member of the Internet Architecture Board, stated: “Monique van Dusseldorp and her staff are doing important work for this industry and at a consistent quality.”
Speaking after winning her award, Monique explained why winning was so significant for her and the company: “Five years ago when I launched the company, the market was booming and along with it came a plethora of industry newsletters, news services, research and events companies. Meanwhile, other category winners included, Clustervision, specialists in large-scale storage and database clusters, Telebaby, a webcam project allowing parents, friends and family to keep an eye on babies in the neonatal unit of Utrecht hospital, and Coax, a consumer organisation critically following the providers of internet access via cable.
The Vosko Trofee is a Dutch award for the most admirable internet initiatives that benefit society. The 2003 Vosko Trofee was won by Wireless Leiden, a not-for-profit Wifi network in the Dutch city of Leiden. The Wifi initiative in Leiden was also deemed of international relevance. A team of 10 coordinators supported by 100 volunteers have started to build a wireless broadband network in the city of Leiden, unique in its approach. The non-profit aspect results in easy access to good locations for antennas: companies, as well as city authorities, individuals and non profit organisations have given permission to put antennas on their buildings, the installation of which is handled by a network of volunteers. At the time of release, 12 nodes are active, providing access to half the city. Wireless Leiden offers access and use of the network, and is itself not an ISP. However, users of the network also use it to share their internet access with each other, or to play games via Real Tournament servers.
